ABC STEP®

Measure, Strengthen and Improve Your Safety Program

The ABC STEP® Health and Safety Management System is a no-cost safety benchmarking and improvement tool that helps contractors and suppliers evaluate their programs, identify opportunities for improvement and develop a roadmap toward world-class safety performance.

Through an annual self-assessment, participants measure key components of their health and safety programs and may earn Participant, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Diamond recognition.

STEP helps companies:

  • Evaluate their current safety management system
  • Identify program strengths and improvement opportunities
  • Benchmark performance against industry leaders
  • Create a structured plan for continuous improvement
  • Demonstrate a companywide commitment to safety
  • Become eligible for additional ABC recognition programs

Companies that consistently apply STEP best practices can be nearly seven times safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average, according to ABC’s 2026 Safety Performance Report.
